Why Sharp Family Insurance?
Hi, I’m Robyn Sharp
Let me tell you why I decided to get involved in Medicare insurance. I promise, it's a good story.
My husband, John, and I started Sharp Family Insurance back in 2018 after years of owning a captive insurance agency. We had always specialized in personal lines insurance – auto, home, boats, motorcycles – the everyday stuff. And we loved it that way!
But then in May 2019, one of those things you never think will happen to your family – happened.
My dad had just turned 65 and signed up for Medicare. Only 19 days after his birthday, he and my mom were in a car accident that broke his spinal cord and left him paralyzed in a wheelchair for life.
He had immediate surgery after his accident, but there were issues with his brand-new, less than a month old, Medicare plan. There were a whole new host of things that had to be considered now that he would be in the hospital for the next two months. He now needed surgery, new doctors, rehab hospitals, and long-term physical therapy. He also needed durable medical equipment, a wheelchair, and new medications. Things were just completely 100% turned upside down.
Now, my parents are about the most resilient people out there, and they faced all these tests head on. It’s been five years, and he is doing great! He can do an amazing number of things on his own, is stronger than ever, and lives a full life. But it hasn’t been without challenges when it came to Medicare, doctors, and managing medications.
During this time, I saw just how important these things are and the kind of impact they can have on someone’s qualify of life. So, I started leaning everything I could about the world of Medicare alongside them. I got licensed, certified, and appointed with all the major insurance carriers. I took extra training courses and consulted with experts. With 20 years of insurance experience, (I literally got my first insurance license just out of high school), I knew that I could make a difference.
But these kinds of projects aren’t small, and I knew I would need help to make it happen. John was already booked to capacity on the personal and commercial insurance side. And our current clients needed him to be available for them.
So I went to the next person that made complete sense. My mom.
My mom, Rhonda, started working in insurance when I was 7 years old. She worked her way up as a part-time file girl, laid off from the struggling oil industry in the 80’s, to eventually owning her own Allstate agencies. She had trained John and I both when we first started – me in high school and him fresh out of the Air Force. She had retired from insurance a few years back but still wanted to work. I came to her and told her my ideas about how we could help the senior community in Hot Springs, and she was all-in.
As someone who is actually on Medicare herself, plus who is a caregiver for a disabled Medicare beneficiary, Rhonda is absolutely an expert on what is needed. She has navigated these situations personally and knows what its like. From dealing with the actual Medicare plans to receiving with the stacks of confusing junk mail and never ending scam calls.
When I tell you that we do this work because it means something to us, I’m not lying. We genuinely care for each of our clients like they are a member of our own family. Our local, veteran-owned small business is here to make a difference for the seniors in our community.
